This is a mountaneous region, right down to the coast, and so its name; Maritime Alps. This region is surrounded by the Var, Alpes de Haute Provence, Monaco, and the Mediterranean on the south, and its famous coastine of the French Riviera, or the Cote d'Azur, where you'll find its beaches and luxury hotels.

The area inland from the busy Côte d'Azur is a good base for a those interested in quiet, and in a variety of outdoor sports including cycling, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing, hiking, climbing, canyoning, and water sports. Venture further up into the Alpes de Haute Provence for canyoning, camping, or visit the nearby Gorges de Verdun.

The inland villages host a variety of festivals throughout the year, and each village has a market day where you can purchase local specialties from artisans and local farmers, including their world famous olive oil.
